A night that Como will hardly forget. On their absolute debut in the Champions League, and more generally in European competitions, Cesc Fabregas‘s team defeated Leipzig 4-1 in front of their home crowd and immediately captured the first three points in their history in the continent’s top competition.

A result that exceeds even the dream. Como didn’t just resist the Germans’ European experience, but played with personality, quality, and courage, displaying right from the start the core principles that have characterized Fabregas’s team’s growth.

Baturina scores Como’s first European goal

The moment destined for the archives came in the 15th minute. Douvikas worked the ball on the right and set up Martin Baturina, who took advantage of the chance to make it 1-0. The Croatian thus becomes the first player in Como’s history to score in the Champions League.

But Como didn’t settle. In the 38th minute, it was Baturina again rewarding Douvikas‘s run. Douvikas outpaced the German defense and made it 2-0, which stood until halftime.

Diao makes it three, Perrone seals the party

After the break, Leipzig tried to pile on the pressure, but Como proved they could still be lethal even when forced to concede more possession to their opponents.

In the 54th minute, it was 3-0. Da Cunha won the ball back, launched a swift counterattack, and Nico Paz found Assane Diao in behind, who finished the move with composure. The goal was particularly significant for the striker, too, as it marked his personal debut in the competition.

Leipzig pulled one back through Andrija Maksimovic, but Como never lost control of the night. In the final minutes there was also room for a strike from Maximo Perrone, set up by Nico Paz at the end of another offensive transition: 4-1 and wild celebrations at Sinigaglia.

From Serie D to the Champions League in seven years

Above all, the journey itself makes this victory special. In the 2018/19 season Como were still playing in Serie D. In 2025/26 they finished Serie A in fourth place, the best position in their history, earning direct access to the Champions League. Now, in their very first European match ever, they’ve immediately picked up a win.

Como have become the twelfth Italian team to participate in the Champions League and one of four debutants in the 2026/27 edition. Fabregas, who had played 104 matches in the competition as a player, has also started his European adventure from the dugout in the best possible way.

Now Rotterdam, then Manchester United

The schedule will soon become more challenging. The next European fixture is on October 14 away to Feyenoord, before another night that promises to be special: on October 21 Manchester United will come to Sinigaglia. Later, PSG and Barcelona will also be on the agenda.

But there will be time to think about all that. September 10, 2026, will remain the date of Como’s first ever appearance in the Champions League. And that first time ended with four goals, three points, and a night that has already entered the club’s history books.
